What is Basal Ganglia?

As you may recall, the basal ganglia are a group of nuclei that are located in the frontal lobes and that are involved in the selection and initiation of willed movement and in coordinating muscle activity initiated by the cerebral cortex.

Many studies have found structural abnormalities in the basal ganglia of people with schizophrenia. However, unlike the decreased volume seen in the limbic system, areas of the basal ganglia were enlarged in people with schizophrenia.
