What is Catatonic Motor Behavior in schizophrenia?

Catatonic motor behaviors refer to a notable decrease in reactivity to the environment. Such behavior may include complete unawareness (catatonic stupor), maintaining a rigid posture (catatonic rigidity), and other behaviors, such as holding unusual or bizarre postures, resisting instructions, or performing purposeless, excessive movements.

Catatonic behaviors occur when patients are overwhelmed by environmental stimuli and are unable to differentiate or filter out the overload of sensory information. These behaviors are not commonly seen in clinical practice, due to the use of antipsychotics.
