Onset Phase (First Break) of Schizophrenia
The onset phase refers to the time when the symptoms of psychosis are first clearly noticed. It is also referred to as the "first break." Although the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia may have been present for months or years, for many people this phase marks the beginning of the disorder.
In many cases, first-break symptoms lead to hospitalization. The onset of schizophrenia is usually characterized by positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and behavior).
