Schizophrenia is a chronic CNS (central nervous system) disorder. It is a devastating mental illness for both patient and his/her family. This chronic brain disorder is considered one of the most disabling of the severe mental illnesses. The unfortunate disease may lead the patient to abandon his/her relationships with their friends and family where they find themselves in a world of delusions. It is a type of psychosis.

Schizophrenia reflects itself with a destruction of thinking where understanding of the real world is completely irregular. Schizophrenia is coupled with a variety of symptoms, including positive symptoms (such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, disorganized behavior, and catatonic movements) and negative symptoms (such as affective flattening, alogia, and avolition). All of these symptoms can seriously impair the person’s ability to interact with others. The first signs of schizophrenia usually begin in late adolescence or early adulthood.  Although symptoms may begin abruptly, there is usually a preliminary (prodromal) phase characterized by withdrawal, decreased interest in school or work, changes in appearance and hygiene, and unusual behavior.

As more serious symptoms emerge, families and friends may become worried and may not know what to do.  In addition, people with schizophrenia are often frightened by their own symptoms, which may include hearing internal voices and believing that others are reading their minds or plotting to harm them.  Within the progress of this disease it is crucial to work closely with a psychiatrist and other mental health professionals. Thus schizophrenia can be managed successfully.

Early diagnosis is important like any other chronic CNS disorders.. With the employment of new treatment alternatives, disease condition became more manageable.
